Subject: When We Name Every Swirl of Clouds, The Naming System Kind of Loses Something

Tropical Storm Chris has formed.
A waste of a name if you ask me. This system is a giant nothingburger. A rain
producer in Mexico, some flooding is possible. Big deal. A <12-hour "named
storm" then it's all said and done.
Heck, I cannot even find tropical storm-force wind gusts anywhere in the near
vicinity of the storm. A junk system that got named. Happens all the time these
days; it never used to be like that 10-15-years ago.
Case in point, here's the NOAA Glossary definition of a tropical cyclone: "A
warm-core, non-frontal synoptic-scale cyclone, originating over tropical or
subtropical waters with organized deep convection and a closed surface wind
circulation about a well-defined center." Does it look organized to you? Can
you find the center of circulation? I certainly can't.
I'm not saying that "I know more than the scientists at the NHC," as some
windbag will probably comment, but let's not sit here and pretend like this
thing deserved to be named. They have done a great job with Beryl and I have no
objections there. But this? C'mon. Don't kid yourself.
