The war saw the complete destruction of the German economy. And opened a
chance for a dictatorial strongman to take over -- you know, someone who
could rally (most of) the people together by blaming all their troubles on
some suitably defenceless scapegoat, like some traditionally-persecuted
ethnic groups, and offer grand promises about Making Fatherland Great
Again ...
