What the article says is actually that the "HAD" night vision goggles...

...not that they were USING them.

Furthermore, you're taking Trump's alcoholic, incompetent Secretary of 
Defense's word for it.

'Night vision goggles are available for Army aviators during nighttime 
missions, but they are not always necessary, said [retired Army chief 
warrant officer with more than 30 years experience in flying Army 
helicopters] Koziol, who noted that he did not know if the pilots were 
wearing the goggles during Wednesday night's flight.'

And note that you can be wearing the goggles on your helmet...

...AND not using them.

And just to be completely clear, they were wearing equipment very 
different than what you presented.
