onald Trump came through on his promise to secure the release of Marc
Fogel, an American teacher detained in Russia, this weekÂone of nine
Americans the president has freed within less than a month of being in
office.
Newsweek has broken down who each of them are. Trump has also said
that "somebody else is being released" from Russia, which he described
as being "very fair, very reasonable."
Marc Fogel
Fogel was arrested in Moscow in 2021 after entering the country with
roughly 0.6 ounce of cannabis that his family and lawyer said was
prescribed by a doctor in the United States to treat chronic pain. He
was sentenced to 14 years in prison in June 2022.
His family and supporters had long pushed for his release, arguing
that his punishment was excessive.
Fogel's 95-year-old mother, Malphine Fogel, has praised Trump to
Newsweek. He had promised her on three different occasions that he
would help her son.
One of these was at the Pennsylvania rally last July moments before
Trump was shot. "He asked about Marc, and I told him," Malphine Fogel
recalled in an interview with Newsweek. "I told him he had to remember
his name and pointed his thumb up. And he said, 'If I get in, we'll
get him out.'"
Keith Siegel
Siegel, an American-Israeli citizen, was held hostage by Hamas in Gaza
for around 16 months, before he was one of three male hostages freed
at the beginning of this month.
The 65-year-old, from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was kidnapped from
Kibbutz Kfar Aza along with his wife, Aviva Siegel. Aviva was freed in
a prior hostage exchange in November 2023 and she has since led an
international campaign seeking the release of Siegel and others still
held in Gaza.
"President Trump and his Administration worked diligently to secure
their release and are committed to freeing all remaining hostages,"
the White House wrote at the time.
