This is the myth, I guess, that if you throw frogs into a boiling
pot of water they'll jump out. But if you put them in cool water
and then slowly bring it to a boil they'll be cooked to death
without ever knowing it. And although it's only a myth, as a
metaphor descriptive of human behavior it has certainly been proven
true.
Related: Orwell's 1984 and announcing that a cut in the chocolate
ration is an increase.
The whole point is to misdirect the public, keep them focused on
anything but is really going on.
Both sides use it.
During the Dubya Bush years, for examples, by destabilizing the
middle east we were going to drive gasoline prices down to 1970s
levels and end terrorism....
