During George Washington's era, Christianity—specifically its various
denominations—was the only religion officially recognized by most
state governments. Nearly all of the original thirteen colonies had
established churches or laws favoring Christian denominations, and
public life was deeply intertwined with Christian practices. State
support for churches, religious taxes, and legal privileges were
generally reserved for Christian groups.
