I know defendants have a right to a speedy trial which is usually
waived. If waived, it depends on the judge.
I watched the OJ trial, so this I saw in action. Simpson did not waive
speedy trial. The prosecution expected that so they went into trial
unprepared.
The prosecution could have dropped the charges and released him. That
resets the clock and gives the prosecution to get their case ready and
then prosecute if they can find Simpson.
