Anything about past activity is inference not observation. It was hard
to see sunspots or know they existed. Solar winds were not known and
auroras were not observed by most people. We can count sunspots hourly
and watch surface eruptions. We measure the solar wind rippling past
satellites.

We can now measure the effects of solar radiation, photons and ions, on
the top of the atmosphere. We know what reactions take place. Applying
present knowledge we can infer past activities and atmospheric reactions.
