We are seeing a dangerous, wide scale revitalization of Nationalism
because of the necessities of Physical Location: from an organizational
perspective Nation States are about as effective and efficient as any
human organizations we have.
But at the Tribal End of it, "Nationalism Kills"*: it's an idolatry
we've inherited from about six or ten thousand years ago when we
first cooked up Nations and their Armies. Our grasp of organizational
logic and the languages we use to convey ideas were *NOT* up to modern
standards. So now the situation is that we are stuck with an
organizational infrastructure that is both effective and murderously
enabled.
To start with, I think we need to re-organize the way we think about
Armies and the Nations they enable. We've long justified the individual's
subservience to these things on the basis of comprehensible "enemies",
which provides us with little protection from the dangerous chaos**
of the Universe we live in: as Mohammed pointed out (an' most still
don' get) *BURNING ROCKS* fall from the Sky hereabouts.
We will still have "Armies", but we need to start thinking about
the situation as being a matter of Civil Defense because while
it's possible to make Peace with the Russians, Chinese, Indians
(or Aztecs for that matter) there is no bargaining with the
Fist of Allah.
(* Kenneth Taylor: "Nationalism Kills!")
(** the failure rate of our intuitions to deal
with even random local events like COVID...)
